What is Strattera

Strattera is the first and perhaps only non-stimulant medication, which efficiently treats Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The main active ingredient in Strattera is atomoxetine.

Non-stimulant medications are generally used as second or even third-line treatments for ADHD because they are generally suggested to be less effective compared with psychostimulants. However, this has changed with the release of Strattera on the open market.

The principle effect of Strattera is much like that of traditional stimulant medications. The primary action of Strattera works via effects associated with norepinephrine release. Norepinephrine is neurotransmitter found within the human brain functioning to transmit nerve impulses. With this, Strattera can be used to treat and control symptoms of ADHD as effectively as traditional stimulant drugs. Yet, unlike the latter, Strattera does not cause dependence amongst patients and is not considered a controlled substance.

Due to increased amounts of circulating norepinephrine associated with taking Strattera, the attention span of ADHD patients is improved while hyperactivity or impulsive behavior is significantly lessened. In addition to these benefits, perhaps an equally important feature of Strattera is that it is not a controlled substance and cannot be abused. Therefore, there are no strict guidelines for prescribing or dispensing Strattera.

Additionally, unlike psychostimulants, which cause a series of side effects, there are very few side effects experienced by patients with ADHD patients undergoing Strattera treatment. Nevertheless, even though taking Strattera is not associated with causing sleeplessness, it may cause nausea, considerable abdominal pains, and drowsiness. If these symptoms occur, they are usually observed in the early stages of treatment. However, after an extended time taking Strattera, these symptoms typically subside. Despite the effectiveness of Strattera, from time to time, some patients may feel the need to take more than one dose per day. The medication is equally effective for both adults and children.

When attempting to acquire a stimulant medication, a patient typically has to provide the pharmacist with new prescription each time. In contrast, when obtaining Strattera, a mere call or fax to a pharmacy is all it takes to get the medication refilled.

Despite these benefits of Strattera, consistent with all medications whether it is a stimulant or non-stimulant, there are precautions that should be taken when taking Strattera. If any of the following conditions refers to you or your child, it is important to inform your treating physician prior to being prescribed Strattera treatment. This includes having an allergy to any component of Strattera, severe heart disease, narrow-angle glaucoma, pheochromocytoma (an adrenal problem), and/or taking monoamine oxidase inhibitor medication (phenelzine, isocarboxazid, tranylcypromine, or selegeline transdermal system).

Strattera can be prescribed in 10 mg, 18 mg, 25 mg, or 40 mg hard capsules. Each hard capsule contains atomoxetine hydrochloride, which is equivalent to 10 mg, 18 mg, 25 mg, or 40 mg of atomoxetine. The recommended maintenance daily dose is 40 to 80 mg, but not higher than 1.2 mg/kg/day. The total daily dose of Strattera should not exceed 100 mg.

Strattera is considered an instant-release medication, which begins to work shortly thereafter a patient takes a dose. Strattera is typically prescribed for a patient to be taken either once or twice daily. When prescribed as a single time dose, taking Strattera early in the morning is the best time. In contrast, when taken twice daily, one Strattera pill should be taken in the morning and the second one in the late afternoon or early evening.

Irrespective of dosing schedule, Strattera should not be taken after 6 p.m. so that it does not interfere with sleep. Strattera may be taken with or without food at the discretion of the patient. However, when taking Strattera, guidelines provided by the treating physician should be strictly followed. Strattera is considered a safe medication to be prescribed to a patient for long-term treatment for ADHD.

My daughter was treated with Strattera from January to May of this year. At first she experienced an outstanding effect from this drug, but after a couple of weeks the potency began to lessen. Nevertheless, following the summer holidays we wanted to our daughter to resume taking Strattera, but the doctor said she no longer needed it. As such, it has now been 3 months without Strattera and our child’s behavior is almost perfect and I am happy. I am confident that this medication has a positive effect on children with ADHD.

Today is 5th day that our son has been taking Strattera, 40 mg at a weight of 66-70 lb (lost some weight after he started taking the drug). He has not yet reached the full therapeutic dose yet, but the positive results are noticeable compared with day number one. It is now possible to negotiate with my son with nearly no problems. He even started to do his homework without any reminders, he prepares for school without help, and his grades are improved. What can I say?! I am just happy!! I think all of these positive changes are because of Strattera.

For those who question whether to use Strattera, the answer is definitely yes (consult with a doctor before taking this drug)! We have six months of experience with this drug. At first I thought that Strattera helped a small amount, but when taken at the right dose the effect is quite strong. I have seen improvements in my child’s behavior as he no longer has tantrums and he is making progress at school that is even being noticed by his teachers. He has improved in all aspects of his life. When taking Strattera it is important to have patience as the benefits may take some time to kick in. I am very pleased with Strattera. A side effect of this drug is the absence of an appetite, but we can live with that.

This medicine has worked very well for my child! We have a family history of ADHD and also possibly bi-polar disorder. This is the second time we have tried Strattera and it seems to be a very effective medication for improving focus and concentration as well as helping with anxiety and frustration. It also has a long list of differences such as dyslexia, ADHD and dyspraxia that contribute to mild depression. In general, Strattera appears to be helping my son with everything, including impulsivity. Depression seems to disappear and life goes on. Lastly, for anyone interested in taking Strattera, the only side effect that we really noticed was our son began to talk in his sleep.

This medicine has worked very well for my child! Family history of ADHD and possibly bi-polar. Have recently noticed that my son has been talking in his dreams. Nothing to worry about, but just an obvious side effect. 2nd week in 18 mg. This is the second time we have tried the Strattera and it seems to be a very effective medication for focus and concentration. It also has a long list of differences such as dyslexia, ADHD and dyspraxia that contribute to mild depression. The Strattera seems to help with everything, including impulsivity. Depression seems to disappear and life goes on. Just wanted to make note to anyone who may be interested or taking this medication that talking in sleep is a side effect.
